Overview

One of the most adventurous and thrilling trekking, Lower Dolpo possesses the beauty that has the appeal to allure many hearts. Known for its Mystery filled stories, it resides between the peaceful surrounding of Mt. Dhaulagiri and Tibet. This region itself holds a great diversities of flora as well as fauna. Lower Dolpo’s major significance is its rarity found in species of either plant and even animals. Other than its natural beauty, cultural traditions have made the region even more lively and sophisticated. The Buddhist Monasteries and sweeping welcome from the Tibetan community prove the whole region to be nothing but an extremely memorable journey one could imagine. Accustomed with snow-capped mountains, forests, and eye-soothing landscapes, Lower Dolpo Trek makes individual gawk at the beautiful Tibetan highlands for hours.

Places during Lower Dolpo Trek

During the journey to the ultimate trek to Lower Dolpo in Nepal, one has to attain at different milestones such as Shey-Phoksundo National Park, Nepalgunj, Jhupal, Dunai, Bheri River, Sandul Gompa, and many other fascinations. As any Trekking in Nepal, Lower Dolpo also happens to be passed via Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. Beholding the sight of the city, we take a flight towards Nepalgunj and relish the local market, mini-zoo and also the villages nearby. Another equally striking place Jhupal and Dunai, make us drool over the scenic beauty of Mt. Annapurna and Mt. Dhaulagiri peaks along with the waving Bheri river. Passing through deep captivating gorges, pine forests, we reach a small village, Tarakot. Walking alongside the Tarap Chu river and exploring the farm terraces, it takes us to Laini. Nawarpani, a place crossing in the trail, is one the adventurous and thrilling roads one can encounter in the way to Do Tarap. This small community of Do Tarap is mostly resided by Tibetans and Magars ethnicity, now for years. The toughest confrontation in this whole trek is justified by Numa La pass but results in equally pleasurable incredible views of barren mountains of Dolpo. Climbing the steep land of Baga La pass, one quenches themselves from the snow-capped mountain view of Mt. Kanjirowa. Going through gradual ascends and descends, finally, Phoksundo Lake greets us with its ever so exquisite splashing and whistling composition. Descending downhill, we trek to our previous tracks and assemble all the finest possible memories of trekking in Lower Dolpo.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in TIA Kathmandu and Transfer to Hotel (1300 m/4264 ft)


 

As you arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal. One of our representatives will greet you and transfer you to your hotel. As you reach to the hotel, there will be a hotel check-in and then you will be greeted with the welcome drinks. After some rest, you will be introducing with the trekking guide and staff member of ours. In the evening, you can stroll around and explore the Tourist hub Thamel Bazaar in order to be familiar with the place. Our team will also offer you a welcome dinner, where you can enjoy a delicious dinner with our team. After having dinner, stay overnight in the hotel at Kathmandu.

Note: Welcome Dinner is optional, some trekkers prefer both farewell Dinner and Welcome Dinner, while some only prefer farewell dinner only.


Day 2: Kathmandu Sightseeing and Trek Preparation


 

Have early morning breakfast and get ready for full day Kathmandu valley sightseeing tour with our professional guide. You will explore some highlights of UNESCO world heritage sites such as Pashupatinath Temple the holiest Hindu Temple, Boudhanath stupa world biggest Buddhist stupa, Swoyambhunath as popular as "Monkey Temple", and Kathmandu Durbar Square. After exploration, you will return back to the hotel and attend a short briefing orientation class about the further trek to Lower Dolpo. One of our representatives will provide you orientation class. Next day, we will begin our journey to lower Dolpo, so get ready for the next day trek, put all the essentials things into your backpack. Have dinner and stay overnight in the same hotel.

Day 3: Fly Kathmandu to Nepalgunj (152m/500 ft) 1 hrs


 

After having morning breakfast, take an hour-long domestic flight to Nepalgunj from Kathmandu. During your flight, you can enjoy the scenic flight, you will reach to Western Nepal, a town near the Nepal India border. As you reach to the Nepalgunj, you can stroll around the town, an interesting Terai business hub of Nepal, where you can explore both local Hindu & Muslim cultures over there. You will also get chances to encounter with the Muslim villages along with mini Zoo at Nepalgunj. After exploring around, you can have dinner and stay overnight in the hotel at Nepalgunj.

Day 4: Fly Nepalgunj to Juphal (2,320m/7,610 ft) 45 mins and Trek to Dunai (2,850m/9,348ft) 2-3 hrs


 

Have a morning breakfast and departure from Nepalgunj with around 45 minutes flight. As you reach to Juphal, the official trekking point, from where you will begin trekking to Dunai. As you reach to Juphal, the town is beautifully located over the Himalayan foothills. As you begin your trek, you can enjoy the magnificent views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri peaks to its north. Continue trek through the following the beautiful terraced fields to the fascinating Bheri River and its narrow gorge. Finally, around 2 to 3-hours trek will lead us to Dunai, the administrative headquarter of the Dolpo region. As you reach to Dunai, you will explore the Dunai around. After exploration, have dinner and stay overnight in the guest house of Dunai.

Day 5: Trek Juphal to Tarakot (2,543m/8,341 ft) 5-6 hrs


 

Morning breakfast and continue trek along the southern bank of the beautiful Bheri River and continue trek upstream with an easy trekking trail. During your trekking trail, you will pass through numerous beautiful deep gorges, hanging bridges and remote villages of the highland. The further trek will follow the tremendous gorge with pine trees and an ingenious path built about 7meter above the river. On the way, the colorful terraced field of Tarakot greets us eventually and allow us to an energetic and exciting feeling to trek forward. As you reach to Tarakot, have dinner and stay overnight in the Tarakot.

Day 6: Trek Tarakot to Laini (3,160 m/10,365 ft) 6-7 hrs


 

Have a morning breakfast and departure beautiful Tarakot. Continue trek alongside Tarap Chu river and cross it twice before reaching SandulGompa. The path leads through the farm terraces and rural villages, where you can enjoy an encounter with the local people. After making a few ups and downs, finally, we will get chances to encounter with the river bed to reach our today's destination, Laini, which is situated at the elevation of 3160m. As you reach Laini, you can explore the beauty of Laini. Have dinner and stay overnight in the guest house at Laini.

Day 7: Trek Laini to Nawarpani (3,545m/11,627 ft) 4-5 hrs


 

Have a morning breakfast and continue climb on a steep trail and walk along switchback above the Tarap River. The further walk is quite exciting as the valley becomes narrow gorge that in some places you can jump from one side to another. The further descending trail will take us to the bank of the Chyugur Khola from where short trek will take us to Nawarpani. As you reach Nawarpani, you can enjoy witnessing the local culture of the people. Have dinner in the local guest and spend overnight over there at Nawarpani.

Day 8: Trek Nawarpani to Do Tarap (4,090m/13,415 ft) 7-8 hrs


 

Have an early morning breakfast and continue trek gradually up, which leads us to Kamattarka at the confluence of the Tarap Chu and Lang Khola, a stream flowing from the east. The further trek will cross a narrow gorge and leave the tree line behind us. You can enjoy witnessing the wild rose and juniper bushes, typical of the dry inner Himalayan valleys. After walking for several more hours, we reach finally the village of DhoTarap, surrounded by an irregular stone wall. Enjoy exploring the beautiful villages of Dho Tarap. Have dinner and stay overnight in the guesthouse of Dho Tarap.

Day 9: Do Tarap acclimatization and exploration day


 

Have a local morning breakfast and today we will spend the whole day visiting nearby monasteries. We will also get a chance to get acquainted with the local culture. The Dolpo people wear homespun clothing that is sometimes dyed a maroon color and they favor Tibetan style combat or dhocha (boots with upturned toes) for footwear. You can witness both genders often wear religious amulets and strings of coral, amber, and turquoise. We will be amazed to witness their unique culture, costumes, and lifestyle. Have a delicious local dinner with the local people and stay overnight in the guest house of Do Tarap.

Day 10: Trek Do Tarap to Numa La Base Camp (4,440m/14,563 ft) 4-5 hrs


 

Have an early morning breakfast and continue trek onwards Numa La Base Camp, which is situated at the elevation of 4440m. Continues trek towards upper Tarap valley and follow in this plain valley with patches of lush verdant grass on both sides of the river, which is completely different from other parts of Inner Dolpo. We will continue to trek on this pleasant track that leads by the Tarap Chu upstream all the way. We will continue further walk up to the valley on a rough trail until we reached the Numa La Base Camp. As you reach to Numa La Base Camp, we will explore the Camp and views stunning mountains from the camp. And finally, have dinner and stay overnight in the guest house of Numa La Base Camp.

Day 11: Trek Numa La Base Camp to Pelung Tang (4465m/14,645 ft) 6-7 hrs


 

Have an early morning breakfast and continue trek by leaving Numa La Base Camp and cross the Numa La pass on a steep trail all the way up the top ridge of the pass. The further trek by following the ridge with the incredible views of the barren mountains of Dolpo up to Mt. Dhaulagiri (8167m). Again, we will descend down to Pelung Tang. As you reach to Pelung Tang, you will explore the Pelung Tang village around and have dinner and stay overnight in the guest house at Pelung Tang.

Day 12: Trek Pelung Tang to Dajok Tang (4,080m/13,382ft) 5-6 hrs


 

Have a morning breakfast and continue trek with a steep climb up to the top of Baga La pass.you can enjoy fantastic views of the dry landscape and the distant snow-capped mountains including Mt. Kanjirowa. Stay over there at the top of the pass and enjoy taking pictures with the mesmerizing views of the mountains. Again, we will descend down to the Dajok Tang and explore the local village nearby. Have dinner and stay overnight in the Dajok Tang.

Day 13: Trek Dajok Tang to RingmoGaon / Phoksundo Lake (3,600m/11,808ft) 3-4 hrs


Have early morning breakfast and begin trek alongside beautiful pine forests and alpine vegetation. You will reach Dajok and explore the village and continue trek to Phoksundo Lake. You will get chances to explore the traditional Tibetan village Ringmo of the Dolpo region. You can also encounter with the local people of Ringmo and learn sub-culture of the local people during your trek. Have dinner and stay overnight in the guest house of Ringmo / Phoksundo Lake.

Day 14: Phoksundo Lake rest and exploration day.


 

Have a morning breakfast and explore the great Phoksundo Lake and camp at its shores. You can enjoy witnessing various yaks’ caravans moving in and out of Ringmo mostly towards Tibetan borders on remote mountain trails. The way to the beautiful lake, we can also explore nearby monastery. As we reached the Phoksundo Lake, we can enjoy a relaxing walk on the serene lake’s shores. Today we will explore the lake areas and the crystal serene Lake of Phoksundo with a great view. You will also enjoy with the scenic view of the lake and explore small unnamed lakes around. Have dinner and stay overnight in the Phoksundo.

Day 15: Trek Phoksundo Lake to Shyangta (2,520m/8,265 ft) 5-6 hrs


 

After morning breakfast, we will continue trek downhill to Chepka. Continue trek downhill following the trail of the massive overhanging rock with the stunning landscapes. We can find many important medicinal minerals which are believed to cure almost anything in this area. The trekking route will go through the following the passes with the lovely villages. Gradual trek along the riverside, following steep ascent to the top of the hill. You will reach the beautiful Phoksundo Lake, one of the most famous Lake in the world. Enjoy viewing the most beautiful Phoksundo Lake. Continue several descend and ascend until you will reach to Shyangta. As you reach to Shyangta, explore around the beautiful places and stroll around. Have dinner and stay overnight in the guest house at Shyangta.

Day 16: Trek Shyangta to Juphal (2,320m/7,610ft) 5-6 hrs


 

After early morning breakfast, we will continue trek following the trail gently sloping upwards Juphal by following the Sulighat surrounded by birch trees. You can enjoy the most spectacular views of the mountain above us and Jhupal Village below. As you reach Jhupal, stroll around and explore the dynamic town. Have dinner and stay overnight in the guest house at Jhupal.

Day 17: Fly back to Juphal 25 mins to Nepalgunj 1 hrs to Kathmandu (1,300m/4,264 ft)


 

Have a morning breakfast and take a domestic flight from Juphal to Nepalgunj. Around 25 minutes flight will offer you panoramic views of the green and white mountains below. Then we will take a connecting flight to Kathmandu. During your flight for Kathmandu, you can also enjoy the stunning aerial views of the scene. As you reach Kathmandu, you will transform you to the same hotel, after hotel check-in, you can do some rest. In the evening, you can enjoy a farewell dinner with the typical cultural program of Nepal. Stay overnight in the hotel at Kathmandu.

Day 18: Final Departure


 

Have a morning breakfast and departure. Hotel Check-out and one of our representatives will transfer you to the International airport as per your flight schedule. You will be there before three hours of your flight. We will wish you a safe flight toward your motherland and hopes we will meet you very soon at Nepal in the next trek.
